Authority acquires Avondale water system | The Augusta Chronicle: "AIKEN

"The Valley Public Service Authority officially closed on a deal to take over Avondale Mills' water system last week, and residents and legislators say that's a step toward a better system and lower rates for customers."

Concerns about 12 million gallons of water being lost in the system over a month's time arose late last month, but board Chairman Otis Gibson said taking on the system was still the right decision. The board worked out a deal with Avondale that would require the company to pay $600,000 to the authority to cover expenses involving the water leaks and other improvements. Stimulus money and grants and loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development agency will help cover other rehab costs.
