Scana pays $169 million in county property taxes

CAYCE – Scana Corp. and its subsidiaries, including S.C. Electric & Gas, paid approximately $169 million in property taxes in South Carolina for property assessed in 2013.

“These dollars help support schools, police, fire and other critical public services and have a significant impact in the communities we serve,” SCE&G spokesperson Eric Boomhower said.

The largest single tax payment was made to Lexington County in the amount of approximately $32.1 million.

Rural electric cooperatives recently got some good news when USDA announced that $250 million is available in its Energy Efficiency and Conservation Loan Program to help residential and business customers make energy efficiency improvements that will lower their electric bills. Cooperatives also can use loan funds to improve their own energy systems, such as transmission and generation facilities.

"Even though the commission has general authority to regulate in this arena, it may not impose requirements" that violate statutory mandates, wrote appeals judge David Tatel. The judges said the FCC's rule in effect treated all Internet service providers as common carriers — transporters of people or goods for the general public on regular routes at set rates. Examples of common carriers include airlines, railroads, trucking companies and utilities.

Shealy voiced her strong opposition to a water rate increase application filed by Carolina Water Service, Inc. to the Public Service Commission of South Carolina.
In an email to her constituents, Shealy is urging residents to attend the meeting to address their concerns.
"I am emailing you today because there is still one more way that you can stand up and try to stop this rate increase," she said in an email. "This meeting is the last opportunity for residents to testify against the rate increases."
